Perfume application tips
To make your favorite fragrance last all day, follow our tips below for optimal application.
1) Take a shower or bath and dry your skin.
It’s best to apply fragrance after a shower or bath, as it binds better to warm skin.
2) Apply a moisturizing cream.
Ideally, use a neutral moisturizing cream before applying the fragrance to help it bind better to the skin.
3) Perfume first, then clothes.
Perfume your body before putting on your clothes, to help you reach your body’s pulse points more easily.
4) Apply perfume to pulse points.
Pulsation points are the areas of the body where the skin is thinnest and the veins are closest to the skin’s surface, creating warmer spots.
Applying perfume to the wrists, behind the ears, neck, elbows or knees will fix it better and help it to radiate.
5) Don’t rub perfume.
Once you’ve applied the perfume, leave it to dry and never rub it, as this will spoil its effect.
6) Apply to clothing.
Perfume generally stays longer on clothing than on the skin, so putting a little perfume on a scarf is a good idea.
7) Don’t overdo the perfume
Don’t mix two perfumes together, and don’t use more than necessary.
What are my pulse points?
Where are my pulse points?
On the inside of the wrists, in the elbow, on the temples, under the earlobe (not behind it), in the warm hollow of the neck, at the base of the throat, on the back of the knees and wherever you feel your heart beating.
Can perfume last all day?
A perfume can last four to six hours (or even longer), depending on the ingredients-and how dry your skin is (Perfume dissipates much faster on dry skin or when the air is particularly dry).
From the moment you apply: The top notes, or “head” notes, last about 5-15 minutes before dissipating.
The middle notes, or “heart” notes, last two to four hours and make up the bulk of the fragrance.
The base notes usually last from four to six hours.
How long will an open bottle last?
Fragrances don’t last forever but proper storage will help preserve the quality and longevity of your perfume.
The key is to keep it away from light and heat so a bathroom or sunny dressing table is NOT the place for your perfume stash: higher temperatures affect the top notes of the fragrance, making them musty or more acidic.
If you have a dark cupboard or drawer to store your perfume in, that’s perfect (The best way to store it is in the box, or if you’re using a drawer, wrap the bottles in a scarf or even plastic, as unglamorous as that is.
Be aware that perfume that’s never been opened and kept in a dark place can last more than 40 years!)
If you can’t cope with this, store it on a shelf out of direct sunlight in a room that’s not too hot.
Then, once a bottle is open, you should get up to two years of life out of it (we’ve had fragrances that have lasted much longer…)
Lighter, citrusy scents deteriorate faster than opulent florals…
You may find that you get more life out of a spray bottle than a splash: if you touch the glass to your skin, and oil from your body gets into the bottle, this can also affect the life of your perfume: touch your skin to the edge of the bottle – and don’t use the cap to apply, as it will come into contact with the contents.
NB: Dark glass bottles will keep the fragrance longer than clear ones.
But don’t let the fragrance last too long!
Remember, perfume is meant to be worn and enjoyed.
Eau de Toilette, Eau de Parfum, Parfum… What are the differences?
These descriptions are used to identify the strength or concentration of perfume in a fragrance.
Concentrations can vary from fragrance to fragrance, but here is an average guide.
In general, the higher the percentage, the higher the price – but be aware that different concentrations (perfume or eau de toilette, etc.) may also have different notes in them, and not simply be weaker or stronger.
Extract/solid perfume: 20-30%.
Perfume: 15-25%.
Eau de Parfum (EDP): 8-20%.
Eau de Toilette (EDT): 4-15%.
Cologne (EDC): 2-4%
After Shave: 2-4%
Soap: 2-4%
Body Cream/Lotion: 3-4%
Perfumed Candle: 10%
Significance of the fragrance notes
In perfumery, top notes play a crucial role in the overall experience of a fragrance.
Here’s a detailed look at their importance and characteristics:
Meaning of Top Notes
1) First Impression: Top notes are the first scents perceived when a fragrance is applied. They provide the initial impact and can influence a user’s decision whether or not to enjoy the fragrance.
2) Volatility: These notes are generally light and volatile, meaning they evaporate quickly. This creates a fresh, dynamic opening to the fragrance.
3) Transition: Top notes prepare the nose for the arrival of the middle notes. They provide a smooth transition to richer, more complex layers.
4) Emotional impact: Often fresh and vibrant, top notes can evoke immediate emotions such as joy and energy. They are essential for capturing attention and arousing interest.
5) Duration: Although they typically last only 15 minutes to an hour, they play a crucial role in engaging the user and encouraging the discovery of the other facets of the fragrance.
Examples of top notes
– Floral: Rose, Jasmine, Gardenia
– Fruity: Apple, Pear, Raspberry
– Aromatic: Mint, Basil, Rosemary
– Spicy: Pepper, Ginger
These notes create a sense of freshness and lightness and play a fundamental role in the first impression of a fragrance.
In short, top notes are essential for creating a captivating and memorable olfactory experience.
